Quinnatisset Country Club

Quinnatisset Country Club takes its name from a Nipmuck word once used for the area now known as Thompson Hill, a district claimed by the tribe in 1670 and originally part of the township of Killingly. The same name belongs to a small brook that circuits the golf course from a neighboring meadow before emptying into the French River.

The surrounding terrain has long been rugged ground, historically described as broken and varied, with granite ledges beneath the hills and loose stones scattered across the fields and pastures. Homesteads were first granted on the "Great Hill" in 1721, and the settlement that grew there sat along the routes of stagecoach travelers heading toward Boston, Providence and Springfield; present-day Route 193 began as the toll road known as the Boston Turnpike.
