Brownson Country Club

Brownson Country Club in Shelton plays as a par-70 course originally laid out by architect Albert Zikorus and later reworked by the firm of Cornish, Silva & Mungeam. Water comes into play on eleven of the holes, and bunkering around the green complexes puts a premium on accurate approach play and sound course management. The slope rating is 128.

The club's name traces to the Brownson family, longtime Shelton landowners. Their Greek Revival homestead, now known as the Brownson House, was determined by a 2002 architectural assessment to have been built between 1820 and 1825 for Hezekiah Marks, a Justice of the Peace and state representative. The Brownsons bought the property in 1866 and remained for more than a century. In 1971 the Shelton Historical Society acquired the house and moved it about a mile to the Shelton History Center, where it stands today.
