Highland Greens Golf Course occupies land with deep local roots. The property was once the farm of Revolutionary War Captain Ambrose Hine Jr., who served with the Continental Army at the Battle of Long Island and later helped defend the Hudson River. Stonewalls he built still run through the grounds, and the red house across the driveway from the third tee is the home where he raised his nine children. Horseshoes mounted on the maintenance building recall nearly two centuries of farming on the site.
The course itself dates to the golf boom of the early 1960s, when rising interest in the game left area courses crowded. Conceived by George A. Sabo Jr., it was designed from the outset as a lighted par-3 layout, allowing league players and regulars to continue their rounds into summer evenings after the sun had set.
