Fenwick Golf Course in Old Saybrook traces its origins to the turn of the twentieth century. A guide published in 1900 recorded the layout at 2,550 yards with 85 members, an amateur course record of 42 held by F.E. Cooley, and a club led by course designer J.B. Moore as president, M.B. Brainard as secretary, and John Graveson as green-keeper.
That same year the course drew wider notice when Findlay Douglas, the 1898 U.S. Amateur champion, played in the inaugural Fenwick Open. After that event the club turned its attention to local play and did not stage another major tournament.
The early greens were larger and more squared off, with coarser turf, and contemporary accounts described hazards that included sand-covered country roads alongside the bunkers. Conditioning has changed considerably since then, but the character of the course endures in its small greens, wide playing corridors, berms and firm fairways.
