About Shennecossett Golf Course
Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton offers a scenic test for a range of skill levels, with views of the Thames River and Long Island Sound from the 16th and 17th holes, where passing vessels such as the U.S.C.G.C. Eagle or a submarine may come into sight.
The course dates to 1898, when it began as a four-hole layout. It expanded over the following 18 years to six, nine, eleven and finally eighteen holes. In 1916 architect Donald Ross redesigned the layout — one of five Ross courses in Connecticut — and in 1919 he rerouted three holes to finish the work. That configuration stood until 1997, when a land swap with Pfizer provided ground for three holes overlooking the water.
