About Wee Burn Country Club

Wee Burn Country Club traces its origins to the 1890s, when golf was first played informally in an open field in Darien by Augustus Floyd Delafield, Dr. William French and a small group of friends. John D. Crimmins, who became the club's initiator and first president, recorded the early years in his diary, including the chance encounter in June 1893 that introduced him to the game. In April 1896 Crimmins gathered local golfers at his home to formally establish the club, and the Scottish professional and landscaper George Strath was engaged soon afterward to lay out a course and teach members the golf swing.

The club's name was proposed by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, a Darien resident and friend of Crimmins, who suggested naming it for Stony Brook, the stream that ran in two branches through the property and crossed several holes; "wee burn" is the Scottish term for such a narrow waterway.

Wee Burn joined the United States Golf Association in 1897 and later the Metropolitan Golf Association, and was a charter member of the Connecticut State Golf Association (1899) and the Women's Metropolitan Golf Association (1900).
