About Golf Club of Avon

The Golf Club of Avon traces its origins to 1925, when Samuel Graham of Unionville and Dr. Ralph Cox of Collinsville discussed creating a golf course in the area. Graham purchased the 60-acre Stillwell Farm in Avon with the intent of converting it into a course, and after interest in membership emerged among residents of Avon, Canton, Farmington, Simsbury and Unionville, additional land was acquired.

A nine-hole layout was routed and Charles Henderson was engaged as the club's first golf professional. Bonds were sold to fund a clubhouse, with construction beginning in 1927; springs on the property supplied water and lumber was cut from nearby woods. The clubhouse was completed in 1928, the year the club was incorporated, and George Seibert later succeeded Henderson as professional.

The original course was reconfigured in 1963 so that the opening nine finished at the clubhouse, and a third nine opened in 1967, giving the club 27 holes that can be combined into three different 18-hole routings.
