About Lake Valley Golf Club

Lake Valley Golf Club in Longmont has a long and varied history. Originally planned as a private club, the project shifted course soon after construction finished, and the renamed Lake Valley Golf Course opened instead as a public layout. None of the home sites first envisioned for the property were ever built.

In 1973 the course and surrounding land were bought by Fred Sproul, a developer from New Mexico, who had ambitious plans of his own. Difficulties with his other projects led to foreclosure, and in 1977 the property was acquired by Scott "Scotty" Edwards, the head golf professional at the time. By then the course had drawn a loyal local following, including league play from Beech Aircraft and IBM. Its regulars became well known enough that Boulder native and author Rick Reilly drew on them for the "Goons" in his golf novel "Missing Links," written when the place was widely nicknamed "Snake Valley."

Later ownership passed through local and Canadian investors before the course was leased, with an option to buy, to a development company in 1987.
