Ballyneal is a private golf and hunt club set in the sand dunes south of Holyoke on Colorado's eastern high plains, an area known locally as the Chop Hills. The terrain's rolling, sandy character lends itself to an inland links style of play in the tradition of courses in Scotland and Ireland. As a destination club, it provides on-site lodging and dining for members, and most treat it as a second club.
The idea dates to 1979, when local golfer Jim O'Neal saw links potential in the dunes. The concept gained momentum years later when his brother Rupert proposed a course to accompany the family's hunt club. The brothers acquired 700 acres from a nearby farmer and in 2002 brought in Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design. Doak and his team spent two years studying and refining the routing before construction began, following the existing contours of the land rather than reshaping them.
