Twain Harte Golf Course

Twain Harte Golf Course sits in a mountain meadow with deep local roots. The Me-Wuk people once camped beside a broad expanse of bare granite known as "The Rock," the area's oldest landmark, now partly submerged but still visible at the western end of Twain Harte Lake.

In 1862 Patrick Williams took up 640 acres that included the meadow where the course now lies, planting apple and pear orchards, grazing cattle and keeping a watering stop for freight wagons headed to the mines on the east slope. The ranch passed to his son, who sold it in 1923 to Alonzo and Keturah Wood. The Woods subdivided the land in 1924 and named the community Twain Harte for Mother Lode writers Mark Twain and Bret Harte.
