About Carlton Oaks Country Club
Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee has a long tournament history, having served as a venue for the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School in 2010, U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur qualifying, and a Canadian Tour qualifier. It has also hosted the San Diego Junior Masters, which draws some 400 players aged 8 to 18 from around the world, as well as the NCAA Western Region Finals and the 1974 NCAA Championship.

That 1974 national championship is still remembered locally for its finish. Wake Forest, fielding a young squad that included future PGA Tour players Curtis Strange, Jay Haas, David Thore and Bob Byman, held a narrow lead over defending champion Florida late in the final round. Strange and Florida's Gary Koch reached the 540-yard par-five 18th with both the team and individual titles undecided; Strange struck a 250-yard one-iron to within seven feet and holed the putt for an eagle to seal the win.
