About Richmond Golf Club
Richmond Golf Club traces its origins to 1924, when it opened as the Carquinez Golf Club. The original pro shop measured less than ten by twenty feet, but by 1927 the club had grown to some 300 members and built a clubhouse that remains in use today. Early members were known to fly their private planes in, using the 9th fairway as a landing strip.
The course hosted the PGA Tour on four occasions and was the first in the country to invite African American golfers to compete in professional tournaments. Fields included Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, while Sam Snead took the 1945 Richmond Open with a 72-hole total of 283.

In the early 1950s the club welcomed the women's professional tour. Babe Didrikson Zaharias won the inaugural Richmond Ladies Open with a 54-hole score of 224, and Patty Berg captured the 1952 edition at 8-under par from the men's tees, setting a women's course record that still stands.
