About Contra Costa Country Club
Contra Costa Country Club traces its origins to 1925, when W.A. "Daddy" Rigg, owner and editor of the newspaper that became the Contra Costa Gazette, gathered businessmen from Martinez, Concord, Crockett and Pittsburg who wanted a proper golf club of their own. The group sought accessible land with views and natural hazards, settling on a 314-acre stretch of marginal Pleasant Hill farmland that was purchased with personal and bank loans.

The 18-hole layout was designed by Arthur Vernon Macan, an Irish-born lawyer turned golf architect who was among the leading designers in the Pacific Northwest during the 1920s. A winner of Washington State Amateur and Pacific Northwest Amateur titles and a contemporary of Donald Ross, Alister MacKenzie and A.W. Tillinghast, Macan had already built courses across the Northwest and Canada and was known for strategic, demanding designs. The course he routed on the Pleasant Hill site proved a difficult test.
