Northwood Golf Club occupies roughly seventy wooded acres beside the Russian River in Monte Rio, across the water from the Bohemian Grove. The course was laid out in 1928 by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the architect behind Cypress Point and Augusta National, who routed the holes through the area's towering redwoods rather than against them.
The design carries MacKenzie's hallmarks: naturally contoured fairways that follow the lie of the land and greens with noticeable undulation. The ninth is the course's signature hole. The forest setting gives the round a secluded, sylvan character throughout.
The idea of building a golf course on the site originated with Bohemian Club member Jack Neville, one of three men credited with bringing the project about.
