About Sunnyside Country Club
Sunnyside Country Club traces its origins to 1911, when a group of Fresno founders — George C. Roeding, C. C. Teague, Frank M. Romain, Harvey Swift and A. W. Goodfellow — broke ground on nine holes just outside the city. At the time, golfers in Fresno County faced a trip of more than 150 miles across a mountain range to reach the nearest course, with a handful of mostly nine-hole layouts scattered around Los Angeles, Pasadena, Riverside, Monterey and San Francisco.

The original nine was laid out on rough turf with sand-and-oil greens and measured an estimated 2,500 yards or less, a simple design by later standards. Each hole was marked by a metal crossbar flag fitted with a piece of carpet, used to smooth footprints and snake tracks on the greens before putting. The club has since passed its centennial.
