About Ancil Hoffman Golf Course

Ancil Hoffman Golf Course in Carmichael was designed in 1965 by golf course architect William Francis Bell for Sacramento County, giving the area a quiet but testing layout that remains county-owned.

Bell was among the most prolific designers of his era, with close to 200 courses to his name, most of them across the western United States and on islands in the Pacific. He was the son of architect William Park Bell, and the two collaborated on roughly a dozen projects; the younger Bell, known as Billy Bell Jr., kept the firm name William P. Bell and Son after his father's death in 1953. Together the pair are often regarded as California's first family of golf course design.

Much of William F. Bell's work during the 1950s and 1960s centered on the Sacramento region, a period that also produced Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove and North Ridge Country Club in Fair Oaks.
