About Crystal Springs Golf Course

Crystal Springs Golf Course sits beside the Crystal Springs Reservoir in Hillsborough, on land first set aside in 1888 when the reservoir was created to supply San Francisco with water. The course was laid out in 1924 by British architect William Herbert Fowler, and only limited changes have been made to his routing in the eight decades since, leaving his approach of fitting holes to the existing terrain largely intact.

The par-72 layout measures 6,628 yards, with a slope rating of 124 from the back tees. Those markers present the stiffest test, while the middle and forward tees shorten the course for a wider range of players.

Fowler, born in 1856, was among the early architects who argued that a course should follow the natural lay of the land and that topography, rather than artificial features, should challenge the golfer. He was also known in his era for his work on links courses.
