About El Rio Golf Course
El Rio Golf Course is a public course in Tucson with roots in the 1930s, when it served as the original home of the PGA's Tucson Open. It was also where Babe Didrikson Zaharias Monday-qualified into the 1945 Tucson Open, an episode that remains part of the course's place in Arizona golf history.
The property operated as a country club until 1968, when the City of Tucson purchased it and reopened it for public play. The layout is classic and walkable, with tight fairways, small greens, mature trees and two lakes. It measures just over 6,400 yards from the back tees and close to 5,400 yards from the forward tees, with junior tees at just under 4,700 yards, giving players of varying ability a suitable set of markers.
