About Bent Brook

Bent Brook is a 27-hole public golf course in Bessemer, developed in the late 1980s by owner Lee, who assembled tracts from several neighboring landowners along the then-new Interstate 459. The three-nine layout was intentional: 18 holes could be played each day while the remaining nine rested, a rotation that helped sustain the bent grass surfaces central to the course's identity. Financing a public course under private ownership was unusual in Alabama at the time.

The course opened to strong demand, drawing roughly 60,000 rounds in its first year and more than 50,000 annually for the following decade, and its success encouraged similar projects across the area.

Changes have continued over the decades, including the addition of a practice area and new tee boxes on several holes to broaden playability. All greens were converted to AU Victory bent grass in 2014 and 2015. A 2016 tornado removed hundreds of trees, leaving a more open layout while preserving many of the mature hardwoods that frame the fairways.
